Faster and Faster: Speeding up CDN Hosts

After my previous blog post on the CDN for media server applications, I’ve started to run into bottlenecks that result in worse performance sometimes, resulting in a huge investigation into what is slowing us down across the board.

I’ve just started scratching the surface on what can be done to improve speeds to assorted parts of the world. I’ve just finished deploying Linux 5.15.74 to all of my machines after patching it with the most recent Cloudflare patches allow for a tcp_collapse parameter to keep low latency while improving throughput.

From these learnings, alongside my previous kernel tune that was being used across the board, I’ve managed to achieve around 4-5gbit on a single thread across the Atlantic.

I’ve also been working on improving the throughput available to the nodes, and have started to manage them using ansible. Overall things are moving along well and I’ll continue to update this blog as improvements are achieved.
